In this study, we found that older men had an attenuated coronary blood flow responses to isometric handgrip compared to young men. Following infusion of the beta blocker propranolol, the change in coronary flow at peak handgrip exercise decreased in young men (9.7 ± 2.1 versus 2.7 ± 0.9 cm/s, P = 0.008) but not older men (3.8 ± 1.3 versus 4.2 ± 1.9 cm/s, P = 0.9). Older men also had attenuated coronary hyperemia to low dose isoproterenol.
